Shop → Storage → weapon
- Open Shop at the lodge laptop or through the vicinity menu. Buy the alternative ammunition you want; default ammunition is free, alternatives cost money.
- Open Storage and select your rifle or shotgun.
- Add ammunition of the correct calibre to your carried slots. Multiple slots can hold the same ammunition type.
- Equip it to the weapon, or use Auto-equip Ammunition where available.
- Check the compatibility colour and the ammunition type shown on the HUD before hunting.
Compatibility and carrying capacity
Green indicates a compatible weapon/ammunition pairing; red indicates a mismatch. Matching the weapon’s calibre matters more than simply owning a large supply.

Unlimited default-ammunition supply in Storage does not mean unlimited carried ammunition or an infinite magazine. Reloading the gun, changing its ammunition type and restocking carried ammunition are three different actions.
Bows and older instructions
Update 0.5 added alternative-ammunition support for bows and crossbows. Older introductory text saying that they are unsupported should not be treated as the current restriction. Check the exact ammunition compatibility shown by the game rather than assuming every arrow works with every bow.
