Back up the right folder
Exit the game. In Steam, right-click Way of the Hunter 2 → Properties → General and turn off Steam Cloud for this game.
Press Win+R and open %localappdata%/WOTH2/Saved. Copy the entire SaveGames folder into a separate dated backup, keeping its account subfolders. Check the backup, then move the original SaveGames folder out of the active location. Moving it keeps a route back to the old progress.
Do not clear Config or Screenshots to restart progress. Config contains settings; resetting it is a different task. SaveGames may contain an Account_(YOURID) subfolder and SaveData.nrgs.
Establish and verify the new save
- Keep cloud sync disabled and launch the game.
- Check that the character and initial progress are new. Let the game save, then exit.
- Launch again and verify the new character, missions and money. The mere presence of Continue does not tell you which progress is active.
- Make another copy of the new local save before enabling cloud sync again.
The flashing save icon indicates local game saving, not successful cloud upload.
Resolve cloud conflicts deliberately
If Steam presents a conflict, use the save times and the progress you just checked to select the version you want to keep. Selecting the old cloud copy can bring the old progress back. Do not always choose “local”: when restoring a backup or moving computers, the desired copy may be different.
After synchronizing, launch again and confirm the intended character, missions and money. If progress changes unexpectedly or sync fails, stop relaunching repeatedly. Check the account folder, file times and Steam’s cloud_log.txt first.
Restore the previous progress
Exit the game and disable this game’s cloud sync. Preserve the new save separately, then restore the dated backup under its original SaveGames folder structure. Verify the old progress locally before re-enabling sync. Do not use this method to assume that a newer or experimental save can be downgraded safely.
This folder workflow is for Windows Steam. Console and GOG saves need their own platform-specific handling.
